The beginning steps to working with wool, as experienced by best friends Anita and Alice.
Step 1: Get sheep. : )
Step 2: Keep back a portion of wool from shearing day.
Step 3: Wash your wool in hot water along with about a cup of detergent. (You may do this outside if you wish, but it was several degrees below zero on this particular day.)
Step 4: When rinsing, we suggest keeping your rinse water temp the same as your washing water temp. As you might end up with felted wool otherwise. |
Step 5: To dry, we stuffed our wool into a laundry bag, tossed it in the washing machine, and put it on the spin cycle. It then made its way to our wool basket!
Step 6: Next we use hand cards to straighten the wool fibers and make it soft and fluffy.
Step 7: Spin! We bought a Peacock spinning wheel this year and it has served us well.
